Skills That Travel: Which Indian Qualifications Are Recognised in Australia and New Zealand

One of the most common frustrations for Indian professionals making the move to Australia or New Zealand is discovering that their qualifications — even highly regarded ones — may require formal recognition before being accepted by employers or regulatory bodies in the new country. Understanding this before you move saves significant time, money, and disappointment.

Regulated versus unregulated professions

The most important distinction is between regulated and unregulated professions. In regulated professions — medicine, nursing, engineering, accounting, law, teaching — there is a formal registration or licensing requirement that must be met before you can practise. The relevant professional body assesses your qualifications and experience against local standards. In unregulated professions — most business, management, and technology roles — employer acceptance is the only requirement, and most Indian qualifications from reputable institutions are received well.

Medicine and nursing

Medical qualifications from recognised Indian institutions are assessed by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) or Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). The process involves document assessment, examinations, and usually a period of supervised practice. It is lengthy — often 18 months to three years — but the outcome is full registration and access to a labour market with significant demand.

Engineering

Engineers Australia and Engineering New Zealand both assess international qualifications. Engineers from IITs and other reputable institutions generally find the assessment process more straightforward. Chartered status or membership of the relevant body significantly strengthens employability and salary potential.

Accounting and finance

The CPA Australia and ICAI have a mutual recognition arrangement. CA members may be able to achieve CPA Australia membership with reduced examination requirements. ACCA and CIMA qualifications are recognised in both countries. The recognition landscape for accounting qualifications is among the most favourable for Indian professionals.

Technology

Technology qualifications and certifications are largely employer-assessed in both Australia and New Zealand. Degrees from recognised Indian universities are well-regarded. Professional certifications — AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, CISSP, PMP — carry the same weight internationally as they do in India.
